Early Warning Signs of Arthritis in Dogs

December 12 2025

Arthritis is one of the most common medical conditions our older canine companions face. More than 80 percent of pups over the age of eight are afflicted. However, it can develop at any age. Some dogs begin to show symptoms at just one year old. Arthritis isn’t curable, but there are treatments that can help manage it. Of course, the sooner the condition is identified, the better. A La Porte, TX  vet lists some common signs to look for in this article.

Stiffness/Reduced Mobility

Arthritis affects the joints, making movement both more painful and more difficult as it progresses. You may notice Fido having trouble with stairs and/or getting in and out of the car.

Limping

Limping is another tell-tail sign. At first, Fido may just limp for a minute, usually when he first gets up. As he starts moving around and gets warmed up, the limp may go away. However, it will get progressively worse—and more noticeable—over time.

Reduced Interest In Play

Our canine pals are super cute when they are feeling playful. Arthritis can really put a damper on all that running and jumping. If Fido just isn’t very interested in chasing tennis balls or playing Fetch, arthritis could be to blame.

Exercise Reluctance

Fido needs the right kind and amount of exercise to stay healthy. If your furry best friend doesn’t want to run, jump, or climb stairs, there may be something going on with him.

Irritability

Being in pain isn’t exactly a mood booster for Fido, any more than it is for us. You may notice your canine buddy acting glum and withdrawn. If the pain is severe enough, it could also lead to aggression.

Sensitivity

Another thing you may see is Fido flinching, moving away, or just reacting when you pet or touch a sore spot on his body. That’s a definite red flag!

Accidents

This one is a bit more common with pooches that have to climb stairs to get in and out of the house. Fido may find it quite difficult to go outside if his joints are hurting!

Licking/Biting

Dogs often lick or nibble at sore spots or joints on their bodies. Fido may fuss at his paws, legs, or the base of his tail.
