Hanging Toys
Hanging toys are definitely a big hit among our winged pals. Get a piece of twine, and string a few things through it for Polly. There’s almost no limit to the things you can incorporate. Some good options are playing cards, plastic bottlecaps, popsicle sticks, rice cakes, cupcake cups, waxed paper cups, shower curtain rings, and beads.
Foraging Toys
Foraging toys are great fun for birds! Get an egg carton that’s made from corrugated cardboard, and cut out a few of the pockets. Fill a pocket with smaller items, like treats, popcorn, and bells. Use two drops of non-toxic glue to attach the top and bottom, and let your bird have at it. You can also fold paper into shapes around a treat.
Pasta
Many of our feathered patients love pasta. Others prefer to just play with it. Offer Polly some uncooked pasta strands. She may have a blast just breaking the pieces apart!
Goodie Basket
Get a wicker basket with handles, and make sure there aren’t any sharp pieces sticking out. Wrap soft cloth over the handles. Or, just hang a plastic shower basket in your colorful pet’s cage. Then, fill the basket with a variety of things for Polly to play with. You can incorporate toilet paper tubes, crumpled-up pieces of plain paper, golf balls, thread spools, and children’s blocks, to name just a few.
Tips
Always put your feathered buddy’s safety first. Never give Polly anything small or sharp, or anything that could be toxic. You’ll also want to avoid anything that is covered with ink, varnish, dye, glitter, or other decorative coatings. Be careful with string and rope as well: they can sometimes entangle birds.
