Five Cute and Safe Ways To Spoil Your Pet Hedgehog

December 12 2025

Do you have a hedgehog for a pet? These little guys can make absolutely adorable animal companions! Hedgehogs are quite unique, however. We all know that Fluffy loves catnip and Fido enjoys chew toys, but what does it take to make a hedgehog happy? A local La Porte, TX vet offers tips below.

Hidey-Hole

Your pet hedgehog will need some hidey-holes, so he always has a place to go if he feels scared or just wants to nap in private. Get your pet a cute little house, such as a tiny igloo. Make sure it’s big enough for your hedgehog to turn around inside. Hedgie will also appreciate a shoebox with some soft cloths. Another option that is popular with these little guys are cozies, which are basically tiny tents or sleeping bags.

Toys

Keep Hedgie entertained by providing him with lots of fun toys to play with. Your adorable little pet may enjoy the tubes from toilet paper rolls. These can make great chew toys! You can also give Hedgie little cars and trucks, balls, stuffed animals, and other cute playthings. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Treats

If there’s one thing all of our four-legged friends love, it’s treats. Hedgie has slightly different taste from Fido and Fluffy. Your quilled pal will enjoy eating bugs, such as waxworms, silkworms, mealworms, and crickets. Be sure to get these from stores: wild insects can carry parasites and diseases. Hedgehogs can also have dog or cat treats; cooked chicken, turkey, or fish; eggs; and certain fruits and veggies. Ask your vet for specific advice, including safe and unsafe foods.

Tunnels

Like most pocket-sized pets, Hedgie loves exploring tunnels and mazes. Let your tiny pal indulge his sense of adventure by offering him lots of little labyrinths. You can buy them, or you can also make them from shoeboxes, PVC pipe, or cardboard. Be sure they’re big enough so your pint-sized buddy can’t get stuck.

Free Time

Hedgie should have regular free time out of his cage. Keep a close eye on the little guy when he’s out and about. We also recommend doing some petproofing, and removing potentially-dangerous items. If you want, you can get your pet a kiddie pool to play in.
