Signs of Sickness in Cats

December 12 2025

Cats can be very expressive at times. Fluffy probably won’t have too much trouble communicating when she wants to let you know that she’s hungry or wants attention right meow. However, our feline pals can also be quite secretive at times … particularly when they aren’t feeling well. This can actually be quite dangerous, as you may not realize your kitty is sick until she’s very ill. A Pasadena, TX vet lists some warning signs to look for below.

Hiding

Some kitties are quite timid by nature. Fluffy may very well spend a chunk of her time hiding. However, healthy cats will emerge by dinner, blinking, stretching, and meowing for food. A cat that just doesn’t want to leave her hiding place could very well be ill. Sick pets also sometimes act grumpy, and don’t want to be touched or picked up.

Unkempt Fur

Normally, cats are very diligent about keeping their fur clean. If Fluffy isn’t feeling well, she may not be up to her usual beauty routine. This will soon make her coat look greasy, unkempt, or even tangled.

Respiratory Issues

Healthy kitties should breathe quietly through their noses, unless, of course, they are yelling at you about something. Wheezing, coughing, gasping, and other signs of breathing difficulty can all be signs of serious trouble.

Vomiting

It’s not unusual for cats to have the occasional hairball. However, frequent, violent, or bloody vomit is definitely not normal.

Loss Of Appetite

While kitties can be finicky, they should always have some interest in dinner. If your feline buddy is just ignoring her food, she could be sick. Changes in your kitty’s water intake can also be a warning sign. (Tip: feed Fluffy at the same times every day. This will make it easier for you to monitor what she is eating.)

Weight Changes

Sudden, unexplainable changes in pets’ weight can also be a sign that something is wrong. It’s not a bad idea to weigh your kitty regularly. Weigh yourself, then pick Fluffy up and weigh yourself again. The difference is her weight.

Litterbox Woes

Pay attention to what you find in the litterbox. Changes in the color, texture, odor, or amount of your furry pal’s waste are all red flags, as is straining to go.
