Hurricane Pet Preparation Tips

December 12 2025

It’s hurricane season again! Every part of the country has its own concerns, when it comes to natural disasters. Here in the Lone Star State, hurricanes are a territorial hazard. Hurricanes can be absolutely devastating, but at least we do know when one is coming, and can prepare. A local vet offers some tips for pet parents in this article.

ID

We strongly recommend all pets be fixed and microchipped. If your fuzzy pal is microchipped, make sure that your information is current in the chipmaker’s database. You can use the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool here to check. Your furry pal should also be wearing ID tags.

Bugout Bag

Have a bag ready for your pet. This should include essentials like food, treats, bedding or blankets, a leash and tie-line, dishes, and any medication your pet needs. We also recommend adding towels, brushes, and a first aid kit. Fluffy will need a litterbox and litter, while Fido should have waste baggies. Include a muzzle as well: If an emergency shelter requires them, you may not have much of a choice.

Supplies

Shelves can go bare pretty quickly when there’s a hurricane on the way. Keep at least a week’s worth of food and water on hand, for both you and your furry buddy.

Carrier

Your pet’s bag should stay in or near their carrier. Ideally, keep these things in a spot where they are easy to grab on your way out the door. Don’t forget to put ID on the carrier! If you and your pet are ever separated, this could be extremely helpful.

Paperwork

Although many hotels and shelters allow pets, this is by no means a universal thing. Do some planning, and make a list of suitable places within a few hours’ drive. You may need to provide proof that your pet is current on their rabies shots and parasite control. Keep copies of all this paperwork in your glove box or pet’s carrier. We recommend snapping photos of them with your phone as well, and/or emailing them to yourself.

Advanced Planning

Don’t wait until there’s a hurricane bearing down on us to start planning. Talk to the members of your family and/or household, and make sure everyone’s on the same page.
