Caring for a Fire Skink Safely and Comfortably

December 12 2025

Are you considering adopting a pet skink? These pretty lizards are truly captivating. While there are many different types of skink, one that is growing in popularity as a pet is the African Fire Skink. A local La Porte, TX veterinarian discusses caring for these brightly-colored reptiles below.

Basics

African Fire Skinks are quite small when they hatch, usually about two inches. However, over the course of the next year or so, they will eventually grow to be about 14-15 inches. These guys can live up to 20 years with good care, so make sure you’re ready to commit before adopting one.

Habitat

A 40 or 50 gallon terrarium is ideal. The space should be more horizontal than vertical, though your pet will enjoy having some things to climb. You’ll also need a good substrate, such as coconut husk, sphagnum moss, or nutrient-free soil. You’ll need to keep the substrate moist. Misting the cage twice daily will both keep the substrate from drying out and help keep your lizard hydrated. Your tiny dinosaur will be happiest if it feels secure, so offer it lots of hiding spots and things to climb and explore.

Environment

As with many other reptiles, fire skinks need specific environmental conditions. During the day, the cage should be around 84 degrees. At night, it can go down to about 70. Your pet should also have a basking area, which should be between 92 and 96 degrees. You’ll need a good thermometer. As for light, your pet lizard will need some UVA light. If they are getting calcium, they can do without UVB. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Food

These pretty lizards are fairly opportunistic eaters in the wild. They enjoy eating live crickets. These should be dusted with calcium regularly, about every third meal. You can mix up their diet by offering ‘treats’ such as waxworms, silkworms, mealworms, and a monthly pinky mouse. Your vet can provide more information.

Handling

Fire Skinks can be shy, but they get a bit braver when they feel safe and secure. They are usually quite docile, so you probably don’t need to worry about getting bit. Having to catch a runaway lizard is the bigger concern. These guys are fast! Only handle your reptilian pal in a safe, enclosed area.
